Treatments for Impotence or Erectile Dysfunction

External Vacuum Therapy
This treatment is a simple, non-surgical method of producing an erection. The external vacuum is based on the negative pressure and tension rings to produce and maintain a naturally engorged erection every time one is needed. A statistic that emerged from a survey refers to an occasional restoration of natural erections. About one in four (26%) reported that after using the system for a number of months, they were sometimes able to have intercourse without using the device. Therefore, the use of a vacuum device to force blood into the penis may have the effect of rejuvenating sexual power. (This statistic noted in a case from Western Reserve University Medical School in Cleveland, Ohio, 1989-1990) To obtain more information about the Vacuum Device call International Vascular Clinics at 1-800-300-3015.

Oral Medications (Prescription Needed)
Viagra® is an oral medication that is produced by Pfizer. It is the first medication of its kind that can be taken orally and helps males with erection problems. You must have a prescription from a Doctor and to be on the safe side have a few tests done. In our office the results have been very good. For more information please call International Vascular Clinics at 1-800-300-3015.

Be wary of other types of medications on the Internet.
Yohimbine Tablets are natural aphrodisiacs from the bark of the yohimbehe tree and is sometimes prescribed by doctors for men with intermittent erectile dysfunction. In most of these cases, the physicians suspect a psychological problem, but cannot prove it. The drug is used to stimulate desire and improve the quality of the erection. (Contact your Doctor about this type of treatment and the possible side effects) There are other types of oral medications, again, depending on your medical condition (contact your Doctor to find out more).

Hormone Medications
A severe deficiency of testosterone, a male hormone, can cause impotence. The nature of the treatment is to give the man oral testosterone, testosterone patches, or an injection in the arm or buttocks to raise the hormone to acceptable levels. In these cases, the treatment can be effective. Only about 4% of the male population, however, have the problem and can benefit from the treatment. (Side effects of testosterone replacement therapy can be serious.) (Contact your Doctor about the side effects of this type of treatment).

Penile Injection Therapy
Physicians learned in the early 1980's that some medications injected directly into the corpora cavernosa would produce an erection within a few minutes. Physicians now routinely use this method to treat men by teaching them self-injection techniques to use at home.

Currently, there are three medications that are used for this purpose.
Prostaglandin E-1 medication is used by itself to induce an erection. This needs to be refrigerated. B1-Mix Combination of two medications are used to induce an erection. No refrigeration is needed. Tri-Mix three medication is used to induce an erection. This needs to be refrigerated. Super Tri-Mix is more concentrated than Tri-Mix. This needs to be refrigerated. Prostaglandin E-1 is the only FDA approved medication for penile injection. Pharmacological injection therapy is an approved form of treatment by the American Urological Association. Erections will last 30-60 minutes and will become more rigid once stimulation occurs. (Side effects can occur with injection therapy, contact your Doctor about possible side effects) Injection therapy has a fairly high success rate and is now the most commonly used treatment for erection problems.

Urethral Suppository
Made available November of 1996, Muse® is a non-injecting delivery system for alprostadil, a drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of impotence. After urination, a small applicator tip (1/8" wide) is inserted just over one inch into the urethra. By gently pushing the button on top of the applicator, a dose of alprostadil in the form of a suppository is delivered. Absorption occurs through the urethra wall (urethra mucosa). This relaxes the smooth muscle in the penis resulting in rapid arterial inflow and penile rigidity.
